After an extended period of beautiful autumn weather, we now have the opposite. Even the extended forecast doesn’t look too good with the possibility of rain almost every day. Yesterday wasn’t too bad with m […]

Camping Season ended for us yesterday. We had to pack up in the rain which is never fun, and our drive home was in rain most of the way. Temperatures are now much cooler but our last 10 days up north were g […]

Greetings world! The month of September has been a rough one here in the Pacific Northwest. Western Oregon endured what is most likely the worst outbreak of wildfires in recorded history. The historic eas […]

When I was younger, my parents would get me the “Old Farmers Almanac” every year for Christmas. In a time before I knew about dynamical climate models and ensemble-based, bias-corrected seasonal forecasting, the […]

Charlie, I don’t really pay much attention to long range forecasts as they rarely seem to be accurate here in Michigan. Last winter was predicted to be brutal for us, and it was just the opposite. This year, they are giving us mixed opinions. Maybe that’s the smartest and safest way to go. Have a great day.

Today was supposed to be cloudy and wet, but there has been no rain so far and the chances have been reduced. We couldn’t have had nicer weather for our final week here. Temperatures were mostly mild and y […]

Today’s weather pattern is a real treat to look at on satellite. We have marginally unstable air moving inland, and this air is just unstable enough to give crustal clear, bluebird skies over the ocean but h […]

Yesterday was a clear, beautiful day here in the Indian River area. We took a drive to Cheboygan late afternoon, and as we approached the in-law’s cabins, we saw what appeared to be heavy dark smoke. As we got c […]

The heat has left us, hopefully for good, during this mid-September month period. The rain also left us as the 0.08″ that fell from the weak TS Sally remains was the only measurable rain that fell during the […]

This will be our last week here at the campground and at least the warmer weather has returned. There is no rain expected anytime soon and that’s always a good thing this time of year. We are seeing a little c […]

After a few very cold days, temperatures today should be reaching near normal. I’m not sure if there was frost here. I didn’t see any but my in-laws at the cabins said that there was some there, and their son i […]

In my last blog post on 8/30, I warned of a “late-season heatwave with offshore flow” that would “dramatically increase fire danger for the Pacific Northwest.” But when I wrote that, never in my wildest dreams did […]

My picture shows what our sky looks like with the smoke from the western wildfires. It isn’t expected to affect our temperatures today, however. Expected highs will be in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees. Lo […]

It is very chilly this morning and skies are clear, but smoke from the western fires give the appearance of a light layer of clouds. I turned the furnace on and let it run one cycle just to get the chill out of […]

After several days of wet, gloomy, chilly weather, today will be more typical for mid September. Although the temperatures will still be a bit below normal, the sun should make up for it.
