  • FINALLY!

It’s one thing to be overjoyed at the first stormy forecast of autumn, but to actually see the moderate rain, gusty winds, and even the mountain snow associated with it is nothing short of wonderful. […]

  • Radar is showing some rain headed our way, and we could certainly use it.  With the unseasonable heat that we have had, everything is drying out and lawns are brown.  I think we are making up for our cool A […]

    • Hi Cathie! Just read your bio, thanks for posting, I enjoyed reading it. Believe me, this blogging here is a lot of fun, and always a challenge, I am always learning something new. Right now, I was just trying to send you a general message, and this method here seems to be the only way I am seeing right now. I have tried Live Chat but it always tells me I must be a registered member, but I have been a registered member for a while now and if I say so, one of the more prolific bloggers here. I always enjoy feedback, but as is usually the case I don’t get much feedback except from Charlie. I need to work on getting more old weatherquackers on here, some may not know about it yet – Nathan said he messaged Josh sometime ago, but he still hasn’t shown up here at all yet. I miss his posts. I hope you will see this reply, and can reply back sometime. I have to check the bloggers map and see if you made it on there yet. As a lifelong professional cartographer I always enjoy and appreciate the depiction of data or information on a good map. Jeff Taylor is also a cartographer, we have a lot of similar interests and have known each other for over 20 years. Take care, Kevin

  • We had a dry thundershower last night, something quite rare for our area.  We had a moderate but brief shower earlier which left us with 0.02 inches in my gauge.  Today is much cooler with highs struggling to r […]

  • DAILY FUELS/FIRE POTENTIAL:
Cool and humid conditions will keep the potential for large fire low across the region through the end of this week. The offshore wind event across Southern California looks weak and will most likely not increase the large fire threat much next weekend. Light initial attack activity will continue across the region…[Read more]

  • It seems strange to be using the AC this late in the season, but highs are reaching the low to  mid 80s.  There are thunderstorms in our forecast for later today and I hope that we do get some rain.  It’s been a […]

  • With the days rapidly getting shorter and the first major system of autumn only hours away, I’ve been getting more and more excited for the beginning of storm season. There’s nothing I love more than a good […]

    • Great write-up, Charlie! I’m more familiar with La Niña/El Nino effects on the East Coast and California. Good to know that chances are better for snowfall here in the PNW during La Ninas! My snow board is ready to go. I received 16.0″ here last year, mostly from the surprise 10-incher in January. We live on a long, steep hill at 600′ and I got home just in time at the start of that storm as the roads were getting quite slippery. I was able to enjoy it all from the comfort of home compared to my 7-hour drive home from work during the smaller December snowfall – ugh! #notenoughsnowremovalequipment, #nosaltallowed.

    • Patricia, you deal with MUCH harsher winters in Michigan than we do in Portland, so I completely understand! For us, La Ninas just mean 44 degrees and rainy instead of 45 degrees and rainy, and there’s nothing skiers love more than low snow levels 🙂

Thank you Laura and Jeff! I am definitely looking forward to the shift too. They’ll allow salt on the roads this year, but I don’t think it helped with the surprise January snowstorm – there’s not much you can do once the snow has already compacted onto the ground.

  • Saturday warmed under partly cloudy skies. Temperatures rose to the 80° mark with lows in the mid 60s. Dew points reached 70° but were in the 60s most of the day. Now at 0743 we have clear skies but with light f […]
