That’s not too bad. A windstorm after the snowstorm would not be good. Breezy I can deal with, high winds, not so much. My trees took a beating from the heavy snow.

Ok, that makes sense! I may have to wait until I empty some of the hard drive on my computer. I have 25,000 RAW photo files on here, which are massive. I need to get an external hard drive, but need to wait until I can fit it into the budget. But once I have more space on my computer, I’ll totally do it. The goal is not to code actual forecast models (like the GFS), but to make software that plots the output from those models. GFS has millions of lines of code!
It would be fun to try and make a really primitive model though.

A good place to start is by downloading GrADS and running their tutorial. GrADS is made for linux but there is a version called OpenGrADS for windows. Here’s a download link: https://sourceforge.net/projects/opengrads/files/latest/download

Wow, yeah, that’s a lot of rainfall. SEA NWS has flood advisories up for south king county, pierce and thurston I believe. Gonna be a challenge with all that snowfall down there. Skokomish River also has a flood advisory up, and there is concern on a few other rivers as well. I think central king county northward might see some minor urban…[Read more]

I think you might be speaking a different language, because that made like, no sense to me. Haha. So basically you’re trying to code your own forecast models, is that what I’m gathering from this? If so, that’s super cool! I have no idea how to do that, but I’d gladly help anywhere I can, and I’d be happy to study up.

Impressive atmospheric river incoming. WRF has 10+ inches over Southern Oregon Coast over the next 48 hours – we’ll see if it happens! I’d expect some flooding on rivers around the region, Portland NWS issued flood watches over their entire CWA yesterday.

One idea I have for a project is to code some weather model visualization scripts using some sort of programming language – namely model charts for the site using some sort of weather visualization. Right now, I am leaning towards NCL, GrADS, Python, or some combination of the three to do the programming.

It’s looking less and less likely for Portland… the rain snow line is JUST to our north. There is the potential for a brief period of wet snow near midnight tonight, but it won’t accumulate to much near sea level.
SW Washington is a different story – snow will continue to pile up tonight, and some isolated places above 1000 feet could end with a foot of snow! Additionally, those areas will see cool showers coming across the area tomorrow, and these showers will most likely be in the form of snow, especially as you head further north.
