  • What a refreshing weekend! With a high of only 68 degrees, Sunday was Portland’s first sub-70 degree day since we hit 69 degrees on June 14.  Our chill was brought to us via a deep upper-level trough arriving […]

  • Well… it couldn’t last forever.

The upper-level trough that pushed through the region last Friday ushered in a much cooler and cleaner airmass to give us a refreshing end to the workweek and start to the wee […]

  • I don’t know about you, but I thoroughly enjoyed our sudden switch to cooler weather on Saturday. I was in Seattle for a weekend of boat chores and band practice, but even more fun than pressure-washing our boat w […]

  • Hi all! I’ll start by giving a “life update” of sorts: I’ve moved from being a meteorologist at Avangrid to being a meteorologist at Portland General Electric! At Avangrid, my work was primarily focused on very […]

  • Hi Cathie, there was an increase recently – a fissure was noticed in Grand Teton National Park, which is slightly south of Yellowstone. This type of stuff happens all the time though, Yellowstone is a very geologically active region. Unfortunately, whenever there’s a little bit of activity, some rather unscrupulous news organizations try to imply…[Read more]

  • When most people think of the conditions needed for wildfires to grow, marine pushes aren’t the first thing to come to mind. Our famous summertime “natural air conditioning” brings a thick layer of morning clouds […]

    • Charlie, I’ve been reading about an increase in volcanic activity in Yellowstone that has closed the park. Do you know if this is true or just hype?

      • Hi Cathie, there was an increase recently – a fissure was noticed in Grand Teton National Park, which is slightly south of Yellowstone. This type of stuff happens all the time though, Yellowstone is a very geologically active region. Unfortunately, whenever there’s a little bit of activity, some rather unscrupulous news organizations try to imply that the recent activity means Yellowstone, a supervolcano, is more likely to blow, but this is not the case.

  • Thank you, you too!!!

  • Sorry for such a hiatus on blogs pertaining to Pacific Northwest weather! I had a backlog of storm chasing blogs to finish up, but now that they have all finally been posted, it’s time to get back to talking about […]

  • Here are the last 5 days of our storm chasing trip from early June. I apologize profusely for not getting these out in a timely fashion!

    Day 6 (Saturday 6/2/2018)

With no storms in the vicinity for the next […]

    • Sounds like you guys are having a great time. Wish I was there although I don’t know how I would handle actually seeing a tornado. Our weather here in Michigan is pretty tame most of the time. I love your pictures.

  • NOTE: I never got around to finishing this on time, but here it is. This post refers to our storm chasing day on Friday 6/1/2018

It was really nice to have an off day on Thursday, because Friday ended up being […]

  • Awesome post Karl! A couple questions:

1.) Any idea why the springs have become so amplified as of late? Maybe it could be because we’ve had some pretty big El Nino/La Nina swings, and the Neutral years we’ve had have been quite variable. 2007-2008 and 2010-2011 were both very cool springs and were moderate/strong La Ninas… I remember this…[Read more]

Our 4th day of storm chasing (5/31/2018) was a much-needed off day. After driving all the way from Albuquerque to the Texas Panhandle to catch some supercells on Memorial Day and seeing fantastic mesocyclones and […]

    • Hoping the days ahead bring more good weather for you! Mmmm, butter and eggs.

We had quite a variety of weather yesterday here in the Portland/Vancouver area. More rain than in the last 2 months and hail. I had hail up to 1/4” in the late morning, then possibly another round at noontime but I wasn’t home to observe it.

Snowing at Timberline this morning (4” as if 5 A.M.!).

  • Hi Nathan! You can download it here. There are many “THREDDS” servers that you can enter and retrieve data from, and the newest versions have added the “NOAA Big Data” project which has GOES-16 and NEXRAD-2 data.

We knew that the majestic, rotating supercell we saw yesterday (Tuesday 5/29/2018) would be very hard to surpass, but Wednesday ended up far exceeding our expectations. Even as early as the night before, the Storm […]

  • Thanks Jeff! Yeah we’ve had some amazing experiences thus far… our second day (I got the blog up last night) was out best with multiple giant mesocyclones, and our third day had plenty of gust fronts and was also pretty spectacular. Yesterday was just a day of driving but today should also feature some strong straight-line winds… perhaps a…[Read more]

    Will do Nathan!!! Thanks.

Tuesday was, without a doubt, the best storm chasing day of our lives. Although we didn’t see a tornado, we saw multiple incredible mesocyclones, which are the rotating updrafts affiliated with all tornadic […]

    • I am bowled over by your photographs and stories! Nature’s power is both beautiful and humbling, and you’ve captured it magnificently! Keep having fun, stay safe, and keep posting!

Our first day of storm chasing was more of a travel day than anything else, so it was icing on the cake that we were treated to some strong storms and spectacular lightning at night. We all decided to meet in […]

    • Awesome write-up and photos!! Glad you got to experience some good weather the first day out. Looking forward to your experiences in the days ahead.

    • Thanks Jeff! Yesterday was just a day of driving but today should also feature some strong straight-line winds… perhaps a tornado if we are really lucky.

Most people run away from storms. But some people are crazy enough to run towards them. I am one of those people and from today through June 7, I’ll be joined by two others as we go tornado chasing over the Great […]

    • Have a great time! Hoping you see some twisters, and stay safe!!

    • If you make it near Hot Springs, Arkansas, at all, let me know!

    • As the Irish say: May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your side. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall soft upon your car until you capture an awesome view of one of nature’s most terrific shows! Be safe and have fun!

Before I was interested in meteorology, I was fascinated by volcanoes. Even as early as preschool, I would religiously watch my many volcano VHS tapes, and I’d make my parents read this book to me. I was […]

    • Awesome Charlie! I can’t get enough pictures of all the volcanic activity these days. I just learned 2 new terms the past week – Laze and Vog. Fascinating to think about what the final result of all this activity will be. Thanks for posting!

    • Charlie, I am a quilter and I just came back from a Hawaiian vacation before the volcano eruptions. I was wondering if I have permission to print this picture of the volcano. I want to add it to the side of my quilt I am making from my vacation.

      • Thanks for reading my blog Mary! I hope you had a wonderful vacation. You can absolutely use a picture of the volcano for the quilt. The images are not mine – they are from the USGS, but they are in the public domain and are free to use. If you want to share, I’d love to see a picture of it when it is done!
