Before I was interested in meteorology, I was fascinated by volcanoes. Even as early as preschool, I would religiously watch my many volcano VHS tapes, and I’d make my parents read this book to me. I was […]

Hi all! I was in Seattle this weekend for yet another fantastic Pacific Northwest Weather Workshop, and I was actually lucky enough to present on some research I had done identifying substantial drops in wind […]

Charlie Phillips wrote a new post, La Nina Bids Farewell, on the site Charlie's Weather 6 years, 7 months ago
Within a few weeks, La “Nina” will be replaced by her cousin, La “Nada,” which is the moniker we’ve lovingly given to ENSO-Neutral Conditions in the Tropical Pacific, where we are neither in a La Nina or an El […]

Charlie Phillips wrote a new post, A Gloomy April, But Sunny Days Ahead, on the site Charlie's Weather 6 years, 7 months ago
After such a prolonged, wet late winter/early spring in 2017, I was hoping that 2018 would feature a more abrupt transition to the warm, sunny stretches of April that give us a taste of our beautiful summer to […]

I’m back! My sincere apologies for being AWOL the last month. I have, however, been working hard on WeatherTogether’s weather models, though I’m having some connectivity issues uploading them to the site since […]

Charlie Phillips wrote a new post, Another Snowstorm for Portland Tonight!, on the site Charlie's Weather 6 years, 9 months ago
As expected, the innocuous, non-sticking snow that was so persistent yesterday quickly ballooned into a full-fledged, crippling lowland snow event last night as heavy band of snow pushed through the Portland metro […]

Charlie Phillips wrote a new post, Snow Early to Arrive, But Main Event Still To Come, on the site Charlie's Weather 6 years, 9 months ago
Another day, another poorly-forecast lowland snow event.
Our low-pressure system was stronger and faster than modeled, and as a result, it generated more and heavier precipitation than expected. Yesterday’s […]

Charlie Phillips wrote a new post, More Snow for Portland Tuesday Night!, on the site Charlie's Weather 6 years, 9 months ago
We probably ended up with approximately an inch of snow at our place in the Woodlawn neighborhood of Northeast Portland from yesterday’s late-season snowstorm. Fellow WeatherTogether blogger Jeff Taylor ended up […]

This will just be a quickie, as I’m getting up early tomorrow to go skiing at Mt. Hood Meadows. But after getting scattered, non-sticking snow showers for much of the day, the Portland metro area is finally seeing […]

Charlie, have a blast skiing today!
I received 3.3” total snowfall as of this morning’s measurement at a 600’ elevation (0.3” from the afternoon total, which melted, then another 3.0” from the evening, steadier snowfall as temperatures dropped). Kudos to our pet care person who pulled double-duty and measured it for me!-
Fairly rare for both Portland and central Maryland to have a similar snow event at just about the same time! Warm mid-40s on Sunday wiped out the snowpack, esp with the stronger sun and increased sun angle. Thanks for posting such a detailed analysis for your snow there in Portland. Have a blast skiing up there on Mt Hood Meadows! Enjoy! Kevin

Nice post Jeremy! It certainly has been very hot in the Pacific Northwest over the past several summers – I hope we don’t have as bad of a fire season as we had in 2014, 2015, and especially 2017, when the Eagle Creek fire roared through the Columbia River Gorge and brought falling ash to Portland!

Charlie Phillips wrote a new post, No Snow for NW Washington Sunday morning 🙁, on the site Charlie's Weather 6 years, 9 months ago
This will be a brief post, I just wanted to let folks know that our chances of snow for San Juan/Whatcom Counties Sunday morning have dramatically decreased due to our shortwave taking a more southerly track. […]

Thanks to an atmospheric river last Sunday that brought flooding to many rivers flowing off the Olympics and Washington Cascades and a strong ridge just offshore for the first half of this week, we’ve had mild […]

Awesome Charlie! I can’t get enough pictures of all the volcanic activity these days. I just learned 2 new terms the past week – Laze and Vog. Fascinating to think about what the final result of all this activity will be. Thanks for posting!
Kevin
Charlie, I am a quilter and I just came back from a Hawaiian vacation before the volcano eruptions. I was wondering if I have permission to print this picture of the volcano. I want to add it to the side of my quilt I am making from my vacation.
Thanks for reading my blog Mary! I hope you had a wonderful vacation. You can absolutely use a picture of the volcano for the quilt. The images are not mine – they are from the USGS, but they are in the public domain and are free to use. If you want to share, I’d love to see a picture of it when it is done!
