Charlie started the topic Visualizing Weather Data in the forum Projects 7 years, 9 months ago
One idea I have for a project is to code some weather model visualization scripts using some sort of programming language – namely model charts for the site using some sort of weather visualization. Right now, I am leaning towards NCL, GrADS, Python, or some combination of the three to do the programming.
I’m sure a lot of us are familiar with…[Read more]

With higher sun angles, hopefully these “Death Ridges” will be sunny and not foggy!

Yeah, it’s tough to get snow that close to sea level. Astoria saw some snow today though!

It’s looking less and less likely for Portland… the rain snow line is JUST to our north. There is the potential for a brief period of wet snow near midnight tonight, but it won’t accumulate to much near sea level.
SW Washington is a different story – snow will continue to pile up tonight, and some isolated places above 1000 feet could end with…[Read more]

There are so many reasons I love the weather, but they all stem from my fascination with the natural world. I’ve always been so interested in not only weather but astronomy, oceanography, geology… pretty much every Earth science in the book.
My weather hobby has led me to study the physics of the atmosphere, and this knowledge has further…[Read more]

Tonight’s model runs are in, and every model has shifted the plume of moisture I was talking about in last night’s blog slightly further north. Now, it appears as though Portland will be too warm for snow, while […]

SW Washington is a different story – snow will continue to pile up tonight, and some isolated places above 1000 feet could end with a foot of snow! Additionally, those areas will see cool showers coming across the area tomorrow, and these showers will most likely be in the form of snow, especially as you head further north.

We all remember the “Ides of October” windstorm on October 15, 2016. The one that sprung out of Supertyphoon Songda and was feared to be a historic Pacific Northwest windstorm that would long be remembered. Models […]

I’ve been watching the potential for snow, sleet, and freezing rain in the Portland area Thursday night into Friday as a weak warm front runs into a cold air mass over the area. The front has trended weaker and […]

I sincerely apologize for the delay in posts. I’ve had a very busy time lately – I moved to a new place in Northeast Portland (the Woodlawn neighborhood, to be precise) and have had very little time to blog. But […]

A major pattern change is in store for us next week. After dealing with very cold temperatures and heaps of snow for those lucky folks in Portland, we will see temperatures in the 50s, snow levels above 7000 feet, […]

It’s been a tough winter for snow-lovers living in the Puget Sound region. It’s not because we haven’t seen any snow – we saw a widespread snowstorm December 8-9 that dropped an inch of snow at Sea-Tac, and a […]

Charlie Phillips commented on the post, The Model Giveth, The Model Taketh Away, on the site Charlie's Weather 7 years, 10 months ago
Yeah, it’s pretty much dead. Models don’t show it re-emerging for the next couple weeks, but it will likely reappear at some point before winter is over. The location of the block is key – we want it to be centered near 150 W for our best chances for an arctic outbreak. If it’s directly over us, we’ll just get a huge inversion with fog and…[Read more]

Thanks David. I have to say, it was a bit painful looking at all these amazing model runs and CPC charts – we were so close to an extremely snowy pattern. Hopefully we’ll still get some on Saturday… I’m looking into that now.
Thanks for reading the blog and engaging with the posts on the Facebook page, I really appreciate it.
