  • Morning clouds didn’t burn off as fast as expected today, so most folks were shrouded in our typical wintertime blanket of low clouds and fog. But after a stunning Sunday and Monday, I’m completely fine with a […]

  • We finished January on a stormy note. I headed up to Whidbey Island last Friday night the 31st to visit my folks, and we lost power on my way up due to strong southerly winds from an atmospheric river that was […]

  • Thank you Holly! I’m glad to hear of the Willamette Falls Legacy project – the industrial use can be an eyesore (I personally think it’s interesting but I shudder to think of the impact on the environment, especially as a salmon fisherman!) but it’s good that they are bringing some awareness to the falls – they are really spectacular. Hopefully…[Read more]

  • Yesterday, my parents drove down all the way from Seattle to celebrate my 27th birthday with me in Portland. I knew that the Willamette was running high, so we decided to go visit Willamette Falls in Oregon City. […]

    • Thank you Kate!

Hopefully there can be some habitat restoration in the future there… a little would go a long way. One can always dream!

When Boston hit 70 degrees yesterday, I assumed it was the warmest weather I’d ever witness in New England in January. Well, Boston hit 74 today. 74 is the average high for […]

I’m currently in Boston for the 100th annual American Meteorological Society conference, and let me tell ya; snow was the very last thing on my mind today. We hit an astonishing 70o  degrees today, absolutely sm […]

Beginning late last week, the GFS (American) model began showing a transition to much colder weather for early-mid January. However, the normally-superior ECMWF (European) model did not, and given how far in […]

So far this year, I’ve only got one day of skiing in, and I count myself lucky to even have that! I went with some weather colleagues up to Mt. Hood Meadows a few Saturdays back, and the amount of snow cover there […]

  • Meteorologically speaking, I can’t remember ever seeing a more boring November & first half of December in my life. I was looking through some climate stats, and the last time Portland saw at least a half inch of […]

    • Great post Charlie! Tracking these AR’s is always a tough one. Thankfully the NWS just issued Flood Watches for everyone, rather than trying to pinpoint things too closely.

Hope the Gorge and I-84 are driveable Sunday!

    • Awesome post Charlie! Looking forward to FINALLY getting some fun weather – it’s been awhile.

  • The Portland metro area should see some light snow some tonight! Most folks will just see a dusting, and up to an inch could fall above 500 feet (especially over Western Washington County) and east of I-205. But […]

  • By now, many of us have heard of the term “bomb cyclone.” Just like “polar vortex,” “bomb cyclone”/”bombogenesis”/”meteorological bomb” (and many other bomb-related derivatives) has actually been in the […]

  • I love the convenience of modern technology. I love how I can pay 10 bucks a month for a music streaming service instead of hauling around a bunch of cassette tapes, I love how I can chat with my brother across […]

  • Hello all! I’ve recently been having trouble accessing WeatherTogether through my ISP, so my Weekly Wrap Up blog posts are on pause until further notice. I am working with my ISP to try and get this issue […]

  • I had originally planned to work on this post last night during the Seahawks/49ers game, but there simply weren’t any boring parts where I could divert my attention from the game and to my computer. From start to […]

  • This will be a quick post (spoiler alert: it’s not), as my work starts relatively early (4am!) and sleep is one of those things in life you don’t want to skimp on. But I felt obligated to at least give you a brief […]

  • We will enter a much stormier pattern Wednesday that will persist through the weekend and possibly beyond, with moderate/strong systems affecting the area every 24-36 hours. Because these storms will be […]

  • This will be a relatively brief post because it’s a sunny, warm autumn weekend in the Pacific Northwest, and I don’t want to spend too much time inside on such a rare occasion!
Let’s start with some obligatory […]

  • Early autumn is usually pretty tranquil for the Pacific Northwest. The semi-permanent ridge of high pressure in the Eastern Pacific that keeps us so dry and mild through the summer is usually still robust enough […]

  • Welcome to autumn everybody! The equinox occurred at 12:50 this morning, and our days will continue to get shorter and shorter until the winter solstice. Interestingly, the equinox has slightly more day than night […]

    • I’m really intrigued by this chilly airmass coming in over the weekend, and the 850/925 temps over the Columbia Basin. Not too often that The Dalles sees a sub-60 high in September, especially not in a dry-ish pattern!
