The heat started to come in on Thursday, but not too badly on this first day with highs in the mid 80s but lows in the warm low 70s, which was only the fourth time during the month. Clouds were lacking for the […]

Kevin Shaw commented on the post, Gobbledygook is the last thing we need during a heatwave, on the site The Weather of Wales (and other parts of the United Kingdom) 6 years, 5 months ago
Over in the US a heat wave is defined by three straight days of excessive heat, usually considered to be 90 F (32 C) or greater. With global warming causing hotter summers the past several years, this threshold had less meaning, and should be extended to 5 straight days, IMHO. In DC, the normal average high in July is now about 89 F, so we can…[Read more]

What are the major causes of these fires? I am sure the tinder is quite dry this time of year to help start the fires. Do you have very many lightning-induced fires? Or are they mostly human-caused, cigarettes, barbecues, kids horsing around, etc? My friend Marty’s next trip over here will, among other things, bring over a lightning detector. He…[Read more]

Love that picture Brie! Such a nice variation of landscape and colors! And clouds too!! We are headed into a heat wave as we start July this weekend, and I am not looking forward to it. Your highs of upper 60s to around 70 sound wonderful! Keep up the great reporting! Cheers, Kevin

Thanks Pat. If you change to wind chill in the winter, what table or formula are you using to get that “feels-like temperature” at this time of the year? Heat index works better in the summer, and it only will go as low as the air temp, and usually it gives a hotter temp due to the high dew points in the summer. I cannot notice subtle changes in…[Read more]

Thanks for your excellent post, Harry on your recent (lack of significant) weather and that you will be using your new thermometer for charting upcoming daily variations (or lack thereof) in your climate. It will be interesting to see how well your new thermometer performs. Have you been able to find a hook or nail to hang the thermometer from? I…[Read more]

Hi Pat! Nice bird shot. He/she looks to be having a good time. I wanted to give you an observation on your report that I have noticed recently. Your “feels like temp” appears to be a “wind chill” calculation. It is of little to no use in the warmer months. I was noticing recently how just about every day that the “feels like” temp and the actual…[Read more]

Hi Harry! It is still preferred to have your thermometer in a shield facing north, but the most important thing to have it sheltered, even when it stays in full shade, as radiation still comes down on the unsheltered thermometer.
I don’t know how much, if any, you can see of this web page, but this is the link to the Taylor “sixes” style…[Read more]

So good to hear from you Harry, I presume at your new location. The thermometer looks really nice – nice digital readout at the bottom, otherwise the unit looks much like the old Taylor max min (sixes) thermometer many of my fellow local observers and I used many years ago. It had mercury in the tubes and you reset the max min with a magnet. We…[Read more]
