Great article Jeff. Noticed that no mention was made of the incredibly cold month of January 1977. As far as I know, that was the month where the greatest Chesapeake Bay ice extent was experienced, and was written up by Joe Moyer who was the MD State Climatologist at the time, for the Mariners Weather Log. I remembered from my old stats that I had…[Read more]

Great report John. Hope you can enjoy your upcoming 3 dog night. Do you have 3 dogs at your disposal to use to keep warm? Are your local rivers finally frozen up tight? Ours have gotten that way the past few days, just in time for a big thaw, though we had a small ice storm on Monday in transition. Do you get a good feed on local NOAA weather…[Read more]

Thanks for another great report John. Definitely you have been milder up there at times this week than I have been down here in central Maryland. Currently +8 with a DP of -5 at 0645 EST Sat 1/6. Rivers down here may be more frozen than your Tanana and Salcha Rivers are..Saw kids playing hockey on Friday out on the C and O Canal near the Potomac…[Read more]

Hi John! Thanks for your comment. The bottom line is population. This east coast “bomb” doesn’t happen as often but when it does, it affects several million people, many more than are in Alaska. Alaskans just have to speak up and make their case known as best they can. Those really “into” the weather know all about the power and the incredible…[Read more]

This week the East Coast is experiencing a “bomb cyclone”. This bombogenesis process is fascinating and the term is thrown out to the public and not explained well enough for the general masses to understand it. […]

Kevin we have several of these so called bomb every winter. Lower 48 don’t hear about them cause they are of no important tearing up an Native village or taking out there power grid due to salt spray like one did couple winter back to Savooga out on St Lawerence Island. The news media is very bias on their reporting as I am sure you have found out with your relationship with Rick.

Alaskans just have to speak up and make their case known as best they can. Those really “into” the weather know all about the power and the incredible damage those Aleutian and Bering Sea LOWS can do. Just make your case be heard and you will get assistance when you all need it up there in the beautiful 49th state. Take care, and keep putting that log on the fire! Kevin

Greeat report Jeff as usual. Getting a little bit of snow here this Thursday morning. I noticed a slight error in your report on the second line “Jan 1st-15th should say Dec 1st-15th” …Maximum and Minimum of only 8.2°. The Average Max/Min/Mean Temperatures Jan 1st-15th
I haven’t even started my December report. I just do too much and am not…[Read more] -

Great report John. Will read that link on living through -40 later. I read forecast discussions frequently, always great in-depth reading. We have a coastal storm expected to develop this week along the East Coast but it looks now it will track out too far east in the Atlantic Ocean to give us anything more than a few clouds on Wednesday. It will…[Read more]
