  • Well yes they get snow and that wintery weather is why taxes ,etc were not collected in December but during the summer months. shepherd for sure where not out in the clod with there flocks as they generally had them herded up in shelter areas just like we do now. It was the romans who started the Christmas themes so they could get the…[Read more]

  • Your winter temps are just an normal winter day here. I bet if you dig back into the 1800 you would find not that much has change from what you are getting now.

  • People go to Chena Hot Springs here and sit in them watching the Northern Lights dancing around the sky Good experience if you have not done it. Also I look for old hot spring remains as it an good source for gold and for crystals.

  • Yes that is virga. I wished I had wide angle lens with me that day as that is just part of the line out over the Tanana Valley. I would say the line was about 30 miles long.

  • Yes even with that record snow they are dragging behind the curve but things can change yet for that area with cold interior and warm gulf air.

  • Forty seven years ago on this date the coldest temperature was  recorded in Alaska. Temperature reach down to 80 below zero.  Was quite an frosty  morning in the maintenance camp  of Jim’s Camp which was 1000 feet […]

    • Extremely interesting report John. Great research on that record-setting low temp in Prospect Creek Camp back in 1971. I would have never thought that the record keepers would approve a temp from an old Davis, if I understand you correctly. Is that ASOS the only station there nowadays? Keep that log on the fire for sure. We hit 60+ here the past 2 days, but we should be cooling off a bit the rest of this week before another warmup this coming weekend. Thanks for a great report! Kevin

  • Well an rock on an string works well. Kevin unless you have big bucks to spend there is nothing, and I repeat nothing on the US market that works after you hit 40 below. So it is back to hand recording and analog equipment. I had OS WMR 2000 here but it had the sticky finger syndrome. It was stolen when the RV was broke into. I tried an…[Read more]

  • Well we finally are getting into our winter mode here. For a bit thought it was bypassing us. Climate folks  said  fall was going to  be milder and it was till this  cold air  moved out of Siberia.  While folks […]

    • Thanks for your report John. I was wondering if Rick Thoman’s snowfall amounts so far this winter also includes Prince William Sound, like Valdez and Whittier – and Thompson Pass. They really got a lot as I recall in early December. Are they running behind also? Of course their normal amount is much more than any other area of Alaska. Thanks for your reply to my query on your kinds of instrumentation. Ray and I were wondering if you have an aneroid barometer – or if you just use the pressure readings out of your VP2? Ray and I agree with you totally on the Acu-Rite weather equipment. Ray has purchased several in the past, being attracted to the lower cost, but he learned you get what you pay for and he has wound up throwing out a lot of their instruments due to poor quality and performance. Thanks, keep that log on the fire for sure! Kevin

      • Yes even with that record snow they are dragging behind the curve but things can change yet for that area with cold interior and warm gulf air.

    • I meant to tell you how much I like that cloud picture you used for that post. We don’t see those types of clouds down here very often. All ice crystals, so wispy and light. Would you consider those downward wisps to be upper-air virga? If so, then there is a lot of wind up there.. Thanks again, Kevin

      • Yes that is virga. I wished I had wide angle lens with me that day as that is just part of the line out over the Tanana Valley. I would say the line was about 30 miles long.

  • Sending more cold your way. It is here now passing thru.

  • Been an quite week here with the exception of an steady East to SE wind. Think the Yukon finally ran out of wind. Wind chills were in the -40 to -50 range. Winds were  steady 20-25 knots gusting to 30.   After th […]

    • Hi John. My friend Ray and I are wondering exactly what specific models of weather equipment you use to back up your Davis VP2 weather station. I know you have shown me the large outdoor Springfield thermometer that displayed -40 a while back, but that doesn’t record max/min temps for a given time period, usually in a 24 hour period. Do you have any extra anemometers or wind vanes to back up the Davis VP2 wind equipment. Perhaps if you have pictures of it other than the ones you have already displayed would be great to show if possible. Do you have a standard, old-fashioned aneroid barometer or perhaps a barograph? We really are interested in weather instrumentation, particularly in your extreme environment. Do you have a backup manual rain gauge that would work better with snow and other frozen forms of precipitation, esp. if your VP2 gauge is not heated. Ray and I have official 4 inch cocorahs rain gauges, but they might not be tough enough for your conditions. Though I believe Rick Thoman uses one, as he is a cocorahs observer, and those particular rain gauges are required of all cocorahs observer data submissions. Thanks John!

I tried an accurate unit and it didn’t make iot thru the winter and when tried to get warranty work on it done in the spring . They said sorry we don’t work on that model any more even tho it was still under 1 yr warranty. Buying an Accurite product is like just throwing money away as far as I am concern. I have couple min/max thermometers out side where I can check them if I have to. One is mercury and it stops at -35. The other is Alchol filled. Interesting the old timers use to use flow point of different alchols for temperature findings. I got 4 inch rain gauge that NWS gave me for spotting/reporting and it tough little bugger. Has froze up few times when temps dropped over night on us after rain. So far it been holding in there. In fact I forgot about it one winter when we went back to Ketch and it was ok in the spring.
As to wind it just knowing what the winds do and knowing the compass points that is comes from. Generally it is either from the west or the east here in the Basin. Like water it takes the path of least resistance.
Maybe some day I’ll get an reseach grade PWS. 5-8K until then what I have is what it will be. Interesting Rainwise will record down to 60 below according to their data but the transmitter operating range quits at -40. Go figure that one out.

  • Looks like our normal wintery weather has decided to come home. Yesterday we saw an high of Minus 9 and the low was minus 19. In fact  at 0200  we were at -15  then the old mercury decided to plummet. Bottom ou […]

    • Great report John. Hope you can enjoy your upcoming 3 dog night. Do you have 3 dogs at your disposal to use to keep warm? Are your local rivers finally frozen up tight? Ours have gotten that way the past few days, just in time for a big thaw, though we had a small ice storm on Monday in transition. Do you get a good feed on local NOAA weather radio there in the Salcha basin? Are there any more entries on your timeline? Looks like there is one below -70 but it is cut off. Is that timeline mounted on the side of your house? Take care, put a few logs on the fire, esp if you don’t have 3 dogs to keep you warm. Kevin

  • Another week gone by and  so far it been an  warm New year  with temps only dropping  into single digits minus’s.  Tuesday was our warmest  hit  the high of 37 deg. F.  At  0800  that morning we were at 31 and  t […]

    • Thanks for another great report John. Definitely you have been milder up there at times this week than I have been down here in central Maryland. Currently +8 with a DP of -5 at 0645 EST Sat 1/6. Rivers down here may be more frozen than your Tanana and Salcha Rivers are..Saw kids playing hockey on Friday out on the C and O Canal near the Potomac River. Very shallow, so it is probably frozen all the way through – very little current in the canal. Take care, stay warm – keep that log burning on your fire. Beautiful picture of your home! Later, Kevin

  • It easy with the Chain being in the 40’s and Ketchikan area can be around 50 this time of year for day time high. Tuesday we hit 37 here from south winds and down slope heating

  • Kevin we have several of these so called bomb every winter. Lower 48 don’t hear about them cause they are of no important tearing up an Native village or taking out there power grid due to salt spray like one did couple winter back to Savooga out on St Lawerence Island. The news media is very bias on their reporting as I am sure you…[Read more]

  • hitting the 37 deg mark at the present. Snow melting by sublimination as the wind pasts over it here. No pooling of water due to low humidity. Artic desert country.

  • One more year behind us like all the water under the bridge in life.  2017 was an bit different  but one manages to adapt.  from 51 below in January to 93 above in June.  Yes it can get a bit warm here in sum […]

    • Great report John. Will read that link on living through -40 later. I read forecast discussions frequently, always great in-depth reading. We have a coastal storm expected to develop this week along the East Coast but it looks now it will track out too far east in the Atlantic Ocean to give us anything more than a few clouds on Wednesday. It will bring a reinforcing shot of cold air, however on its backside as it tracks NE. Happy New Year! Kevin

    • I heard earlier this week it was colder in Arkansas than it was in Alaska. Who would have thought we would have made it colder than Alaska!

      • It easy with the Chain being in the 40’s and Ketchikan area can be around 50 this time of year for day time high. Tuesday we hit 37 here from south winds and down slope heating

  • Here it is  temperatures starting to drop  down the ole thermometer. Hit 18 below  last night and high got up to -6. Day was sort of an lazy day with grey sky and  few lazy snowflakes falling  but tonight we have […]

    • Great report John! Keep up those excellent updates. You would consider our current temps a thaw right now but all these transplanted southerners around here are freezing themselves out constantly. We have been in the teens and twenties the past few days with no snow on the ground. Small ponds and lakes are starting to freeze up though. I guess the snow machine up on Thompson Pass has shut down for a while right now. They probably are just cold up there now. Take care, and keep on putting that log onto the fire! Kevin

  • Well this  past week has been  mild for us here at the homestead as the Tanana jet  kicks in the  down slope winds.  Temperatures  been in the  20’s  with breezes  up to 20 KTS.  But down in the  hole as I call […]

  • Well here we are at the shortest day of the year. Picture was shot at high noon here to show the sun height as we see it here. 3 hours and 41  minutes in Fairbanks. Sun rise 1047 here and sunset was at 1444 to […]

  • Well after hitting  from 40 to as high as 45 deg last few days  during the Chinooks we are starting to drop again in temps but not below the zero mark yet. That might come later this week. The PNA path has s […]

    • Great report and beautiful picture John. Thanks for posting. It certainly does not look like that down here. Hope you have been checking out my daily posts and seeing the pics of my recent meager snows. Mild period this coming week, 60 high on Tuesday is forecasted. Might have a chance of snow for Christmas – still a long time out. Take care, catch you on here again soon I hope. Kevin
