  • TEMPERATURES

It was a fairly typical November as temperatures gradually declined through the month – the warmest air occurring at the very beginning, the coolest near the end. Both the average Maximum and […]

  • Hey Kevin,

After some investigating, I found that the Towson station during the record-year of 1971 was located at 1400 Taylor Ave., which is actually in Parkville (maybe they kept “Towson” for consistency with a previous station?). Anyway, the COOP form during that time shows “Bendix-Friez” as the observer (maker of barometers and other t…[Read more]

  • November 15, 2018 was the day that Baltimore set its long-term record for greatest total precipitation in a calendar year. With 1.33″ of liquid precipitation being recorded by midnight, the 2018 total has now […]

    • Great job Jeff. I am way down the list at West Rockville at 56.81″ at the moment. Do you know if there is any relationship between the Towson station that set the previous state record from July 1 1971 through June 30 1972 and the current Towson station (in CoCoRaHS I believe)? How far away are the two if they aren’t the same? Fascinating numbers in the Free State!!! Thanks, Kevin

      • Hey Kevin,

After some investigating, I found that the Towson station during the record-year of 1971 was located at 1400 Taylor Ave., which is actually in Parkville (maybe they kept “Towson” for consistency with a previous station?). Anyway, the COOP form during that time shows “Bendix-Friez” as the observer (maker of barometers and other things). There is now a Lowe’s hardware store on that site.

The CoCoRaHS station “Towson 0.8 SW/MD-BL-16”, located on the NW side of Towson State University, is located about 3 miles NW of the 1971 station.

  • TEMPERATURES

This October was dominated by mild maximum temperatures in the middle of the month during an amazingly dry period. From the 10th-24th, skies were clear nearly every day, allowing for maximum […]

  • It has certainly been a wet year in the Free State, with several locations already exceeding their record-annual totals, mainly on the western side of the Chesapeake Bay. Some of these stations even have long-term […]

  • TEMPERATURES

It was a fairly warm start to the month as maximum temperatures reached above 70° through the first 10 days, with 4 of those days being ≥80°, and one peaking at 90°, the only such occurrence this […]

Yea!! Looking forward to finally getting some decent moisture and turning off the irrigation system as the extended outlook is showing continuing ppt much of next week.

Interesting that you got caught in a hail event and with thunder to boot! Glad you stayed safe.

  • I just checked that historical data and no year from 1817-1870 came close to the current total in 2018!

Also, thanks for the 3-month graphic from the CPC!

  • Hey Charlie! Yes, they have quite a lengthy record (back to 1871). They would have to average a bit over 3″ for each of the next 3 months to break the all-time calendar-year record – certainly doable.

Baltimore actually has pre-NWS precipitation data back to 1817, though I don’t know the reliability of that info. (and I haven’t checked that…[Read more]

  • The Baltimore Airport has recorded 2.22″ of rain today (as of the 5:00 P.M. EDT report), with a monthly total now of 6.31″ and bringing the annual total up to 51.57″ at this point in the calendar year.  This […]

  • TEMPERATURES

With a few exceptions, the first 2/3 of the month were very warm, averaging above normal on all but 4 days. Nine August days were ≥90°, including 5 in a row (7th-11th), with the final readings th […]

  • Thx Charlie! I wonder about the cause of increase also. Hoping that the 90-degree days have ended for this year, though we could get close on Wednesday. I’ve certainly been loving the cooler, smoke-free air recently! Hood, today, was very detailed.

  • FINAL UPDATE 9/10/2018:

With this morning’s 0.01″ rain measurement, falling between 5:00 and 6:00 A.M., the record-streak of consecutive days with no measurable precipitation has come to an […]

  • UPDATE: 8/23/2018

Today at the 3:00 P.M. observation, the Portland Airport (PDX) was at 91°, setting the all-time record with the 30th occurrence of temperatures reaching or exceeding 90° for the Rose City. T […]

    • Fantastic graph Jeff, it really shows how much temperatures have picked up in the last two decades. I wonder how much is due to global warming, how much is due to land use changes, and how much is simply natural variability. Regardless, 31 is craziness! We almost hit 90 yesterday too!

      • Thx Charlie! I wonder about the cause of increase also. Hoping that the 90-degree days have ended for this year, though we could get close on Wednesday. I’ve certainly been loving the cooler, smoke-free air recently! Hood, today, was very detailed.

  • UPDATE: 8/21/2018

At the 2:00 P.M. PDT observation, the Portland Airport had reached 91°, tying the all-time record for Number of Days ≥90° in a calendar year at 29 days (also in 2015). It would’ve occu […]

  • TEMPERATURES

Overall, July started off fairly close to normal through the first 11 days, with some pretty chilly mornings, mostly in the low-to-mid 50s, even dropping to 47.1° on the 3rd for the month’s lowest […]

  • After a very dry start to July 2018 with only 0.03″ of rain through the 14th at the airport in Baltimore (Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI)), and just 0.41″ covering the 33-day period June 12 – July […]

    • Great report on BWI. Thanks for posting Jeff. My old NCEP/NWS forecaster friend, now retired, Wes Junker, recorded 17.05″ of rain at his cocorahs station, MD-CV-6, Dunkirk 3.2 NNE for the highest cocorahs reported amount for Maryland in July (starting on July 18) and quite possibly the nation.

  • TEMPERATURES

It was a fight between warm and cool air throughout the month, with maximum temperatures ranging from the mid-50s to the low 90s, a difference of 36.5°. The largest day-to-day difference was from […]

    • Great report Jeff. Thanks for your timely post. Beautiful wispy cirrus clouds for your monthly feature photo. We have cirrus clouds here too but rarely do they ever come out looking like those classic images. I only just started inputting my daily data into my excel spreadsheet last night. I finally got it back from Lowell in VA, who had been on vacation . Also there was a miscommunication of emails, I didn’t get his when he first sent the file back on June 22, the date of your cirrus clouds picture. Hope your fire danger is held to a min, southern OR and Northern CA have been hit hard the past few weeks. I heard that sections of I-5 were closed due to the fires. Stay cool, dry and safe!

  • Hoping the days ahead bring more good weather for you! Mmmm, butter and eggs.

We had quite a variety of weather yesterday here in the Portland/Vancouver area. More rain than in the last 2 months and hail. I had hail up to 1/4” in the late morning, then possibly another round at noontime but I wasn’t home to observe it.

    Snowing at Tim…[Read more]
