May of 2018 was the wettest ever recorded for Maryland as the Statewide average of 7.68” surpassed the previous record of 7.31”. The month actually started off quite dry through most of the first half (except for […]

Hi Kevin. It was a bit of a hazy day when I took that pic of Hood.
This morning’s report from Timberline shows the morning snow depth was 53”.
After very little precip here since mid-April, models are showing a fairly robust system (especially for June here) moving in on Friday, showing our area getting 0.50”-1.00”! Snow levels are exp…[Read more]

Thanks Jeff. Looks like Mt Hood is wearing its hat today! Snow level still looks pretty low – I guess there is patchy cover at Timberline Lodge now after your warm month. Is it the resolution of the photo, my computer, or was it hazy on this day of the picture? I don’t think you all have started your fire season yet. Here in Maryland we are nice and wet to keep the fires at a minimum. The rest of the summer – we shall see…

Hi Kevin,
Yes, it does appear as virga in the pic but it definitely was reaching the ground to our southeast that day.
You are correct, Timberline still has a long ski season ahead. They did receive 2″ of new snow yesterday and the base depth was still 133″ as of this morning’s observation. The season total as of this morning has measured…[Read more]

April started off quite cool as the maximum on the 1st remained in the 40s, fooling any thinking that Spring was soon on its way. Minimum temperatures during the first 3 days fell into the 30s, […]

Thanks for posting your April report Jeff. I like the cover photo – looks like virga but I guess the shafts did reach the ground. Sugarloaf Mt in Maine just closed out their ski season this past Sunday, sounded like a “rock ski adventure” with rather patchy cover over their trails. I am sure it isn’t that way at Timberline. Are you all going to be in good shape for the upcoming dry season as far as forest fires go? I guess the fires get started most commonly by “dry lightning” or is it actually from human mistakes?
-
Hi Kevin,
Yes, it does appear as virga in the pic but it definitely was reaching the ground to our southeast that day.
You are correct, Timberline still has a long ski season ahead. They did receive 2″ of new snow yesterday and the base depth was still 133″ as of this morning’s observation. The season total as of this morning has measured 605″. No measurable snow is in the 7-day forecast at the 6000-ft level.
Northern Oregon has done fairly well with snow/ppt this winter, though a bit below normal. Southern Oregon hasn’t done as well and will likely have more issues this fire season. I don’t know what the percentages are between human and lightning-induced fires out here but my guess is that more are usually started by humans.

Jeff Taylor wrote a new post, Immediately Summer in Portland, Oregon?, on the site Happy Valley, Oregon Weather 6 years, 7 months ago
Spring has had a difficult time showing its pretty face here in the Portland area through mid-April, not so much due to very cold air but of a lack of any warm air. Well, that ended abruptly this week. The P […]

Karl, being rather new to the PNW (nearly 4 years), it is certainly interesting to experience the “early” winters here, especially having grown up back East (where winter is still occurring as I type), then being 16 years in the San Francisco area (where summers are “late,” maxing in September/October). I look forward to your next blog on this…[Read more]

Quite a cold end to 2017/beginning to 2018 for you, Kevin! Good descriptive write-up of the goings-on there for the month of January.
Did you measure any snow yesterday? I know you were just on the western edge of accumulations from the current Nor’easter.

Charlie, have a blast skiing today!
I received 3.3” total snowfall as of this morning’s measurement at a 600’ elevation (0.3” from the afternoon total, which melted, then another 3.0” from the evening, steadier snowfall as temperatures dropped). Kudos to our pet care person who pulled double-duty and measured it for me! -

Thanks for posting your January stats. Amazing that you didn’t hit freezing the entire month!! In Jan 2017 I recall that you not only had several freezing (or below) mins but even a few maxs of 32 or less! Got to compare your report with Roger Cunningham’s – As I recall he usually is warmer and wetter, at least during the winter months. Sure would be great to get Roger on here – I will try and email him to see if he could check the blog out and would have any interest.

Great summary Jeff! I have been really busy with all sorts of activities, including getting used to my new rollator walker I got with Marty’s help a week ago. I hope to get all the revision edits together and post the Ellicott City floods on WT sometime this weekend. Will you be able to then slightly modify your May Maryland report to refer to my WT article after publication ? BTW, I was surprised by the 53″ of cover at Timberline the other day – they certainly have a better place to measure the snow than the parking lot – where I saw a mostly snow-free parking lot (not just the paved, plowed part).
Thanks, Kevin! Absolutely, I’ll link to your summary of the Ellicott City article, Kevin. Just let me know when you’ve posted it and I’ll grab the web link.
Thanks for posting the link to my article on the Ellicott City flooding. I hope to add to it sometime as more information comes in and I get a chance to.
