  • Your first video was from the Fox station in Phoenix. I got to visit that station and meet some of the meteorologists there a few years back. Thanks for finding these!

Recently, I saw a post in a Facebook group I am a part of. It was posted by an Australian who was frustrated that, despite it being summer in the Southern Hemisphere, Christmas still carries a winter theme there. […]

    • Great post on the weather in Bethlehem! We do have a couple of Earth Networks weather stations in Israel, and the data is visible in Sferic Maps plus WeatherBug pulls in the current conditions. If you need the archives to them, I can likely get it. I also have a couple of articles from biblical scholars on the birth of Jesus, one who offers proof of a December 25 birth and another who offers (surprisingly) proof He was born on September 11 I can send you sometime.

    • Well yes they get snow and that wintery weather is why taxes ,etc were not collected in December but during the summer months. shepherd for sure where not out in the clod with there flocks as they generally had them herded up in shelter areas just like we do now. It was the romans who started the Christmas themes so they could get the pagans who celebrated solistics to join the church and lot of what is done today still cares those rituals thru today.

With all this talk of “the best meteor shower of 2017,” Alisha and I decided to go on an adventure to take advantage of the majorly clear skies and lack of rain in northern Nevada. Knowing that the lights of […]

Saturday, my wife and I took a few kids we go to church with up to Mount Rose and Lake Tahoe while their mom had a work meeting in Reno. After spending some time playing in the snow where Highway 431 crosses the […]

Note: Lake levels mentioned in this article are from the Saltair Boat Harbor, near I-80 Exit 104.

The last time the Great Salt Lake’s surface elevation was at its historical average of 4,200 feet above sea […]

    • Wow, I actually had no idea how shallow the Great Salt Lake was. Year-to-year variability doesn’t have any impact on Lake Washington, since lake levels are controlled via the Ballard Locks. It’s fascinating that the amount of lake effect snow you can expect to see in a winter is influenced by last year’s snowpack.

An atmospheric river is setĀ up to douse almost the entire West Coast. Raising freezing levels today and tomorrow will aid Thanksgiving travelers the next couple of days, keeping snow off of the major passes. By […]

  • You’re right! That is, in fact, Mount Rainier. It dominates the skyline of most cities in the Puget Sound Region south of Interstate 90. I spent several years living near Tacoma, so I have become very fond of seeing that mountain.

I am friends with a lot of folks in the Tri-Cities who have siblings or kids in marching band. This weekend, they will be traveling over to the west side of the mountains to participate in a parade and competition […]

    • Thanks for a great article Mark. My daughters were in marching band in high school, and they travelled quite a bit to compete in the many band competitions. But we didn’t have a major mountain pass to traverse to get to any of the competitions … I must study a lot more pictures of the snowy NW mountain peak photos for ID. Some are easy, some not so. I am guessing that the picture you have in your post here is Mt Rainier but I am not so sure. I run a very informal contest once in a while when I run into a great picture of a state or other prominent high point – circulating a picture of it among my friends and seeing who can come up with the right answer first. Perhaps I will figure out how I could expand that to this blog, or else just get your private emails and sent it out to you along with many others, including Jeff Taylor, a long-time weather friend from back here in Maryland. Thanks again for the great post!

It is a little odd, but not unprecedented. Who knows, though. The strange winters are more fun anyway!

  • Mine would probably be winter of 2003-2004. I lived on McChord AFB near Tacoma and at one point we had 18 inches of snow on the ground. I was nine, but it seemed like we got a couple of different snow storms right around the new year, along with an ice storm that grounded everything to a halt.

Winter is making an early appearance today in the Tri-Cities, as several places woke up to a dusting of snow. Winter Weather Advisories are in place for the Blue Mountains as well as in Yakima. The Tri-Cities will […]

  • Thank you for your report! This post was written five days ago, so it sounds like that synopsis ended up being decently accurate.

  • I was surprised to see that the average annual temperature is 16, but that the warmest you’ve gotten in recent years is 21. I know my wife could certainly go for that!
