As I’ve mentioned in some of my previous posts, this has been an exceptionally stormy winter for much of California. While these storms have been crucial in eliminating California’s drought, they have also […]

For those interested in making a site, I posted a very quick and dirty tutorial on how to get set up here. I plan to add more to it in the future, but if you are confused, it’s a good place to start.

Hi everyone. I’m Sara Robertson, and I am not a weather pro, but I love to observe the weather as a window into the natural world around us. I’ve lived in and traveled to many places in the world, and my memories are always studded with feelings about the weather: the cold gray drizzle of a Seattle December day; the scent of eucalyptus drifting…[Read more]

I had the privilege of travelling to Pacific City on the Oregon Coast this weekend with my brother. Pacific City is right next to Cape Kiwanda, which along with Cape Meares and Cape Lookout, is part of the Three Capes Scenic Route along the Oregon Coast. Cape Kiwanda has beautiful sandstone cliffs and giant sand dunes, and the very tip of the cape…[Read more]

Charlie replied to the topic Extremely Wet February for the Pacific Northwest in the forum Weather Talk 9 years, 6 months ago
I was on the Oregon Coast (Pacific City, to be exact) this weekend with my brother and we experienced some extremely intense showers with hail and gusty winds. It’s amazing how much harder the rain often falls on the coast than further inland… the showers seem to lose a lot of their steam as they head over the coast range. However, that’s not to…[Read more]

Charlie replied to the topic Southern California Storm and Squall Line in the forum Weather Talk 9 years, 6 months ago
Yeah, at least not for now. It’s amazing how much more rain Northern California gets compared to Southern California. The National Drought Monitor still has some of SoCal under an “extreme drought” though.

I guess we don’t have to worry about California rainstorms missing the southern part of the state anymore, do we? 😛

Wow… that almost reminds me of the big storm they had in February 1998… looks a little similar. I heard there were 75+ mph winds with that squall BTW, lots of trees down throughout the area. Santa Barbara Airport picked up over 4″ of rain today and had to close due to flooding.

Here’s the radar from the Santa Ana Mountains (KSOX) about an hour ago. Look at that squall line ripping through SoCal!

Well, Southern California has its hands full tonight. The only thing they are missing is a tornado warning! Chris Scragg of Phoenix Weather Blog wrote a blog on this incoming storm. Looks like it is living up to the hype!

The 2016-2017 winter has been an extraordinarily wet winter for California, but Washington and Northern Oregon have actually been drier than normal for most of the winter. But with Seattle on track to break their […]

Wow, Eugene has picked up 1.69 inches and PDX 1.54 inches through 4 pm… meaning PDX now has 8.04 inches of rain for February alone. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some incoming reports of landslides and sinkholes in NW Oregon soon.

Looks like we are getting some in SW Washington too:
Landslide: Northbound I-5, milepost 22, Woodland. According to WSDOT, it occurred around 3:50 pm today.
Sinkhole: Southbound I-5, milepost 26, Woodland. Apparently it’s a big one – 5 feet wide!More info on these two events: http://www.columbian.com/news/2017/feb/16/mudslide-blocks-northbound-i…[Read more]

I just found it on the Seattle National Weather Service’s Twitter page… they post great stuff all the time. Same with Portland. Those are the two main ones I look at but pretty much all the offices post great stuff regularly on their Twitter accounts.

I found a few more slides from the last week:

*Landslide: SR 7, Morton - Load More

It’s because this is an emergency and they need funds immediately to prevent further damage. But I agree… infrastructure should be a priority. Hydroelectricity/dams have a surprisingly destructive and deadly history.
